Summer is here and the time is right for dancing! Since June is African American Music Month, we are celebrating with great music. Stop by and check out CDs, find books about famous musicians, and stream music from Hoopla, or find live performances on Medici.tv, all free with your library card.

The City of Stamford will observe African American Emancipation Day at Mill River Park with an afternoon of activities for the whole family. The event, to be held Saturday, June 17 from 12 to 4 p.m., will include displays by area vendors, fun games, good eats, arts & crafts and more. The Ferguson Library will be there too, hosting book giveaways and crafts, and providing information about the library's Passport Services.

The workshop, which will open with a light dinner, will be held Wednesday, June 14, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at the Government Center.

Stamford Pride partnered with several local organizations and small businesses to celebrate Pride Month through inclusive events that help bring support and visibility to the LGBTQ+ community in Stamford and Fairfield County. For a full listing of events, click here.

Teens can earn volunteer credit by helping kids and teens sign up for the Summer Learning Clubs, report their reading progress, and assist with special projects and activities. Stop by any branch to submit a required application, which can be found here.

One training session must be completed to volunteer; these will be held June 3 from 2 to 4 p.m., June 5 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., and June 28 from 2 to 4 p.m. All volunteers must be 12 years old or older by June 10.

Book donations will again be accepted at the Harry Bennett Branch the first Saturday of every month starting June 3. All are welcome to bring their gently used books to the auditorium from 12 to 3 p.m. Mark your calendars: Future donation days include July 1, September 2, October 7, November 4 and December 2. Curtain Call will hold auditions June 5 and 6 at The Kweskin Theatre from 7 to 10 p.m. to cast all roles for Beautiful, The Carole King Musical, which will open the 51st season at the Kweskin this fall. For more audition, callback, casting and rehearsal information, click here.

The winner of this year's Teen Art Contest is Aarna Agrawal, who is in seventh grade at Dolan Middle School in Stamford. Her winning image will be the featured art used in all Teen Summer Learning program materials.

The Ferguson Library's NoveList Plus database is an easy-to-use tool that provides fiction and nonfiction book reviews and reading suggestions for adults and teens. You can search by genre or theme, and find works with diverse characters, written by authors from many different cultures and backgrounds. Or keep up with the latest award winners, celebrity picks and best new audiobooks. A special section for book groups includes recommended titles and tips for energizing the discussion.

Starting Friday, May 26, the Child Guidance Center of Southern Connecticut Inc. (CGC), an affiliate of the Community Health Center Inc. (CHCI), will host free weekly play groups from 9:30 to 11 a.m. for Ukrainian families with children younger than 5. These play groups offer families a chance to connect and learn about community resources while their children play together.

Synergy1Holdings, in collaboration with Alliance for Black Achievement and the City of Stamford, will present a free screening of the documentary The Right to Read: The Greatest Civil Right Issue of Our Time, at the Avon Theatre May 15 from 7 to 9 p.m. The film, from executive producer Levar Burton and director Jenny Mackenzie, sheds light on the current illiteracy crisis in America. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion. Tickets are available here.

Calling all kids and teens in grades pre-K to 8! Celebrate Children's Book Week with free books. Drop by any of our branches at these times and get two books for your home library, while supplies last.

The giveaway is presented in partnership with the City of Stamford, Reading is Fundamental, Stamford Public Education Foundation and Stamford Public Schools.

Tiny Art bags of supplies are still available at the Main Library for artists ages 6 and older who wish to create two 4x4-inch paintings for the Tiny Art Show. Artwork for the Main Library reception is now due May 5.

There are no more supply bags at the Harry Bennett Branch and the Weed Memorial-Hollader Branch. Their deadline remains April 29.
