Join us for a special screening commemorating Haitian Heritage Month 2022.

The documentary Jean-Jacques Dessalines: The Man Who Defeated Napoleon traces the complex story of Dessalines, a leader of the Haitian Revolution and first ruler of independent Haiti. Under his rule, Haiti became the first nation to permanently abolish slavery, but two years after Haiti's proclamation of independence, Dessalines was assassinated by political opponents to what was considered Dessalines' autocratic rule. An introduction to Dessalines in all his complexity that opens a debate about Haitian crises and colonial heritage.

2022; 97 minutes; presented in Haitian Creole and French with English subtitles.
