The Great Santini by Pat Conroy
This universal novel explores the adversity that can come to the bond of a
father and his family and how that bond remains strong through the human
spirit even in grotesque circumstances. Lillian Meecham, Bull's wife, is a
strong woman who demands of her children the utmost civility while trying to
cope with her husband's violent temperament. Ben, the oldest son, athletic
and calm, loves his father as much as he hates him. Mary Anne, the oldest
daughter, finds her father to be the most interesting man she has ever met.
There are two younger children, Matt and Karen. All of the Meechams must
persevere for a year with a man they have come to know as a military monster
and loving father.
