Summer Reading Booklists 2007

You have worked hard all year, and summer vacation is here. Have a wonderful, relaxing summer, but please make reading part of your vacation experience. The summer is a great time to explore different books. You may discover a new genre or author you have never before encountered, and you may be surprised to find that there are books that mirror your experience, or that teach you interesting things. Reading with a friend or a group of friends can be lots of fun. Together you can choose the books you want to read, ask each other interesting questions, and even act out the scenes. Discussing what you read really helps you grow as a reader. The District of Stamford in partnership with The Ferguson Library prepared this booklet to guide you in selecting your summer reading books. At every grade level there are many choices…multicultural stories, mysteries, nonfiction, poetry, folktales…so you are sure to find something that is just right for you. If you are in 4th through 8th grade, our lists also include the nominees for the 2008 Nutmeg Children’s Choice Award. Challenge yourself by reading the nominees in your category, and vote for your favorite in January. You can help select the winner of Connecticut’s own book award! All the titles listed in this booklet are available at The Ferguson Library. The Youth Services Librarians are also available to suggest other books that you might enjoy. During the summer, you can also join the library’s summer reading clubs: Get a Clue @ The Library for children and CSI:FERGUSON for Teens. As club members, you can earn prizes and attend special events. So have a great summer and HAPPY READING!!!! All that parents and teachers can do for the child is to surround him or her with the right conditions. The child will do the rest; the things s/he will do for herself are the only things that really count in education. Anne Sullivan Reading aloud to your child many times a day and bringing him or her to the library weekly to select new books create the right conditions for your child to learn about books. Children who know about books and whose parents surround them with books become lifelong readers. Your child’s teachers and librarians and the librarians at the Ferguson Library invite you to read aloud to your child this summer. Your librarian will help you find many wonderful books, including the following suggested titles.
