“The
Stamford Room at Ferguson Library holds a large
collection of genealogical journals from across the
United States plus a few from Canada and Great
Britain. Many of these have come to Ferguson through
the exchange program of Connecticut Ancestry
Society. The wealth of genealogical information in
these journals may be largely untapped by the
Society's members and by patrons of the library.
Most of the journals are unbound and are arranged by
title in the southwest comer of the Stamford Room.
Others, mostly those with broader appeal, have been
catalogued and are found on shelves in Dewey Decimal
order. It should be noted that some few of the
collections are incomplete within the date ranges
shown. In the listing, journal titles are followed
by Dewey decimal classification if shelved in the
general collection, by the name of the sponsoring
society if not apparent from the title, by the
approximate date range of the journals.
The titles of articles from many of these journals
are indexed in the Genealogical Periodical Annual
Index (GPAI), discontinued since 2002, and in the
Periodical Source Index (PERSI), published by the
Allen County (Indiana) Public Library. Print volumes
of both indexes are found in the Stamford Room and
at other libraries, and PERSI may now be accessed
through
Heritage Quest Online. This latter service is by
subscription, but many libraries and societies
provide access. “ Harlan R. Jessup, Ancestry
Historical Society.
