Nature & Science

 

The Ferguson Library has made the following nature and science databases available for the use of remote visitors. Select a database to search for articles and pictures on different topics from newspapers, magazines,  and journals. Most databases include images and/or the full text.

Please have your Ferguson Library card handy to use the databases.  If you do not have a Ferguson Library card, please visit your local branch to obtain one.  Non-residents may use their local library card to access all databases marked with a blue bullet ().

Academic One File - Provides articles from leading journals and reference sources. Covers the physical sciences, technology, medicine, social sciences, the arts, theology, literature and other academic subjects.

AccessScience - Online and fully searchable access to the finest collection of science reference materials from the latest edition of the McGraw-Hill Encyclopedia of Science & Technology and Research Updates from the McGraw-Hill Yearbooks with thousands of illustrations and the latest Science News® headlines, biographies, and more.

Beacham's Guide to the Endangered Species of North America - Presents extensive data on the habitats and ecosystems of more than 1,200 species identified as endangered or threatened by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife service.

Biology - A comprehensive collection of articles on all aspects of biological science, including its history and issues. Includes articles on biology-related careers and important individuals, as well as topics from active transport to zoology research.

Directory of Open Access Journals - Covers free, full text, quality controlled scientific and scholarly journals in various subjects and languages.

Discovering Collection - A collection of 21 databases covering history, literature, biography, science and social studies.

Expanded Academic ASAP - From arts and the humanities to social sciences, science and technology, this database meets research needs across all academic disciplines. Access scholarly journals, magazines and newspapers - with full text and images!

The Ferguson Library E-Journals - List of all electronic magazines and journals accessible from the library's databases.

General Reference Center Gold  - Use this general interest/business database to search magazines, newspapers, and reference books for information on business, industry, current events, the arts, science, entertainment, etc.

InfoTrac Junior Edition  - Multi-source, curriculum based reference tool for junior high and middle school students.

InfoTrac Kids  - Multi-source, curriculum based reference tool for elementary school students.

InfoTrac OneFile   - Search humanities, education, business, science, current events, art, politics, economics, social science, law, health care, computers, technology, environmental issues, and general interest topics.

InfoTrac Student Edition - Multi-source, curriculum based reference tool for high school students.

New Book of Popular Science - Online version of the popular children's encyclopedia.

PLoS (Public Library of Science) Journals - The Public Library of Science (PLoS) is a nonprofit organization committed to making the world’s scientific and medical literature freely available online. PLoS publishes peer-reviewed, open-access scientific and medical journals that include original research as well as timely feature articles.

Science Reference Center: Provides articles from scientific reference books, magazines, journals, biographies and images. Topics covered include: biology, chemistry, earth & space science, environmental science, health & medicine, physics, technology, and wildlife.

Student Research Center: student-friendly version of the History and Science Reference Centers that provides the same high quality content. Choose content sources (Magazines, Newspapers, Biographies, Country Reports, Film & Video), browse by topic headings, use an online dictionary and encyclopedia, explore top searches of the day, and even limit searches according to reading levels.

Wildlife Reference Center - Articles and images of endangered wildlife, dinosaurs and mammals of the world.

World of Earth Science - Guide to the concepts, theories, discoveries, pioneers and issues relating to topics in earth science. In addition to traditional subtopics in geology and meteorology, also covers a substantial number of topics in astronomy.

U*X*L Encyclopedia of Landforms and Other Geologic Features - Focuses on the physical and geological aspects, structure, and features of 48 of the earth's landforms - what they are, how they look, how they were created, how they change over time, and major geological events associated with them.
