The Perfect Scent: a Year Inside the Perfume Industry
Burr, Chandler

Review

New York Times perfume critic Chandler Burr follows the creation of two new scents, “Un Jardin sur le Nil” by French luxury house Hermes, and “Lovely”, a celebrity fragrance by Sarah Jessica Parker. In a kind of travelogue of the international perfume industry, one of the most insular, glamorous, strange, paranoid, and lucrative worlds is revealed. Burr's is a thorough and often hilarious account of perfumery's colorful characters, the science and art of fragrance creation and the human experience of scent itself.

Charlatan: America's Most Dangerous Huckster
Brock, Pope.

Review

Quackery's P. T. Barnum strides through Brock's raucous yarn of John Brinkley, MD. Recounting the antics of Brinkley's medicine show, which flourished in 1920s America, Brock underpins the whirlwind of Brinkley's myriad enterprises with the human credulity that made them all possible. In a pre-Viagra age, Brinkley's racket was brilliant: he promised to restore male virility by suturing goat gonads into the skin. He also pioneered radio advertising, which successfully lured hundreds of marks to his Kansas hospital before his medical license was finally revoked.
