The Ferguson's Youth Services Department is committed to supporting local educators. To assist you, the library provides the following information, materials, and special services.

Teacher Units

To support your curriculum needs and make the library's materials more readily available, the Ferguson’s Youth Services librarians will pull together a customized package of materials on a specific subject for you. Please request this service at least two days before you need the material. Requests can be made in person at the Main Library, or over the phone.

Professional Organizations

American Association of School Librarians (AASL)
A group of school librarians whose mission is advocate excellence, facilitate change, and develop leaders in the school library media field.

Association for Library Service to Children
One of the youth division's of the American Library Association. Information can be found about reading and programs of special interest to children and parents, including lists of award-winning and notable books, recordings, video tapes and software for children. Includes a link to "Cool Sites for Kids."

CBC (Children's Book Council)
The Children's Book Council is the non-profit organization of children's book publishers that sponsors National Book Week each November. The site contains a wealth of informat ion about children's literature and book publishing.

Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators
A professional organization for both new and experienced writers and illustrators.

Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA)
A professional organization whose mission is to to advocate, promote and strengthen service to young adults as part of the continuum of total library service, and to support those who provide service to this population.

Contains lesson plans, worksheets, games, and flashcards designed for use by ESL teachers.

Colonial Williamsburg Teacher Resources
Find lesson plans, a resource center, and an electronic newsletter centered around colonial life. Links and an online resources catalog are included.

The Educators Reference Desk
The Educator's Reference Desk has links to online education information and 200+ question archive responses.

Jamestown Journey
Free access to lesson plans and other great teacher resources from the "the official education curriculum website of"America's 400th Anniversary".

The Learning Page
A "teacher's eye view" of millions of documents and other resources and suggestions for how to use them in the classroom from the Library of Congress.

Teachers Helping Teachers
Enter this site and you will find a bounty of useful information donated by other teachers and it is updated on a weekly basis. And lesson plans are able to be accessed by subject!

What a fabulous site! Can you imagine getting over 200 ideas for book reports? Stop in and you will be stunned by the wealth of ideas for lesson plans for each subject.

Caldecott Medal Page
Contains a list of winners and information about the history of the award and how it is chosen.

Children's Literature Navigator
Offers a compilation of resources for teachers, librarians, parents, and kids. This site contains numerous links to popular author biographies, award lists, illustrators, and organizations. A great source of information on the wide world of children's books.

Children's Literature Web Guide
A complete guide to Internet resources related to books for children. Includes the most comprehensive guide to English-language children's book awards on the Internet.

Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC)
A collection of children's and young adult
literature. The site contains information about the CCBC collections, services, publications, upcoming events, and the CCBC-NETon-line discussion.

De Grummond's Children's Literature Collection
This leading research center in the field of
children's literature specializes in historical and contemporary American and British children's literature. This searchable site currently has a multimedia exhibition of Ezra Jack Keats.

International Children's Digital Library
A collection of international children's books for children ages 3-13, as well as librarians, teachers, parents, and caregivers, who work with children of these ages.

Juvenile Series and Sequels
See a complete listing of series and sequel titles for children.

Newbery Home Page
Contains a list of winners and information about the history of the award and how it is chosen.

Picturing Books
Offers a wide range of resources and links related to picture books. Includes information on evaluating picture books, practical use for picture books, and a look at the making of picture books. Offers links to storytime resources as well.

PlanetEsme

For teachers, librarians, and homeschoolers, this site's goal is to get great children's books into the hands of great children. The site includes storytime ideas and book recommendations.

School Library Journal
Highlights from past editorials, articles and reviews of upcoming issues are featured on the web page of this well
respected journal for librarians who work with children and young adults.

Internet Library for Librarians - Children/Youth Services

Educational, recreational, and software resources for K-12 age group users, parents, teachers, librarians, and children's book writers. Includes links to sites related to giftedness, home schooling and child abuse, as well as e-mail lists and news-groups for children and teens.

Kathy Schrock's Guide for Educators - Critical Evaluation Surveys
This series of evaluation surveys is designed to aid in the critical evaluation of a web page.

Librarian's Index to the Internet
A searchable database on a broad range of subjects, from current events to literature, recreation, and science. Under each heading the links all have brief annotations; click the Kids heading for a group of well-chosen sites.
