| 1. What is the
Acceptable Use Policy? The City of Stamford,
working in conjunction with the Ferguson Library,
Stamford’s Public Library, is providing its citizens,
the citizens of other Connecticut communities who
hold a public library card, and even residents of
other states who obtain a temporary library card,
with the latest information technology by making
available a wireless Internet service network (WiFi)
here in Columbus Park. While this service is free,
you should recognize that each time you log on to
this network, you accept the terms of this policy and
it is your responsibility to review this policy for
any changes that have been made since you last logged
in.
It is the policy of
the City, together with its partners in the creation
of this WiFi network, reasonably to protect the
confidentiality of users. However, users should be
aware that the network may be required to disclose
data related to the use of this service when it is
served with a valid subpoena or court order.
Furthermore, in
logging on to this network, users agree that they
will not use this service to violate any applicable
law, regulation or legal precedent. Thus, the use of
this service for the following activities is
prohibited:
- Transmitting,
posting or uploading defamatory, abusive or
threatening material or language.
- Violating
intellectual property rights.
- Accessing,
transmitting, posting or uploading material that is
obscene (in accordance with established
constitutional and statutory dictates) or that
constitutes child pornography.
- Spamming, forging
of headers, hacking or distribution of Internet
viruses, worms, and other destructive activities or
violations of privacy.
- Any other
activities which are intended to harm or interfere
with the rights of any third party.
The privilege to use
this service may be withdrawn or suspended if usage
is not consistent with this policy.
Users of this service,
and in particular the parents or guardians of minors,
should be aware that this service does not filter
access to the Internet.
2.
Can anyone use the service?
If you have a properly
equipped and configured laptop computer or PDA and a
valid library card from The Ferguson Library or your
hometown library, you can use this wireless. You will
be asked to login using your library card number.
Just open your Internet browser (i.e., Explorer,
Netscape, etc), a Ferguson Library splash screen will
further instruct you to log-in using your Library
card number. You are now ready to use the
Downtown_Stamford wireless system. If you do not have
a library card please visit The Ferguson Library.
Please note if you live out-of-state, you may get a
temporary Ferguson Library card by visiting The
Ferguson Library.
3. What do I need
to access the Downtown_Stamford wireless network?
You will need to bring
your own laptop computer or PDA and it will need to
have built-in wireless capability or you will need to
install a wireless network card.
4. Can someone help
me configure my computer?
No - everyone's
computer is different and you are responsible for
knowing how to configure your own equipment. We
cannot be responsible for any changes you make to
your computer's settings. If you need additional
assistance, you may need to contact the manufacturers
of your hardware or software.
